Guilty Pleasures By Laurell K. Hamilton
In this first installment of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, Anita is starting to find her stride within the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team, R.P.I.T. or RIP for short. Anita in currently working as their consultant, but that is only one of her day jobs. At night she raises zombies for Animators Inc. She is also “the Executioner,” for the State of Missouri. In the pursuit of crime solving Anita is forced to work with the “beautiful corpse,” Jean-Claude. It’s a good thing Anita carries her own arsenal with her because solving this crime might create a few problems. How does Anita Blake Vampire Executioner handle problems? The Executioner prefers bullets!
In this third installment of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, we meet Anita’s new apprentice Larry. On Larry’s first night on the job they have a run in with activists and vampires. Along with the arrival of new vampires in town there is also a rise in vampire attacks. In walks the Earthmover to solve all of Anita’s problems, or will he? Along with all this action we also meet a potential new flame for Anita, Richard Zeeman. But is Richard all that he appears to be? A story isn’t complete without an epic battle scene, but will Anita survive?
In this second installment of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, we learn more about Manny Rodriguez. Manny is Anita’s teacher and mentor in the art of Animation. Early in the investigation of an unauthorized zombie raising that went wrong, the revelation of Manny’s past is staggering to Anita. Along with Manny’s past Anita also learns more about Vaudun and Voodoo then she ever wanted to learn. Anita also doesn’t like to cruel things that might end up happening in the world of zombie raising. As rouge zombie attacks continue around town Anita is forced to bring out major fire power to take down her prey.
I’ve wondered in the past why Stephenie Meyer decided to make her vampires sparkly? Was it to make them appear more likable and romantic. The big difference is probable due to the fact is the Twilight series is YA rated and it would be much to scary for the kids if she were to have written bloodier and more graphic scenes. I would have loved to have read an x rated version with more blood and intimate details about the Cullen’s and the relationship between Bella and Edward. I can just picture a sparkly cover with a big red X across the front and wrapped in plastic so the kids can’t peek.
That is why I love Laurell K. Hamilton’s vampires that little bit more. More blood and guts. More sex scenes and just more for adults in general. Laurell has found a way to keep the gore and raunchy and still give each character the romance and likability. With the added bonus having scary vampires to hate, the world of Anita Blake is more my speed.
Laurell K. Hamilton I’ve been a huge fan of Laurell K Hamilton’s for many years now. I started out reading Anita’s stores first then I got into Merry Gentry. Fantasy and mystery with sizzling sexuality, all wrapped up a bow together with vampires, fey, wereanilmals, and zombies. Oh and an insecure hot chick with a whole pile of fancy weapons. Laurell has other works as well but these are by far my favorites.
